To Wide Open Spaces, 2026
I’d like to share with you my first completed canvas painting, “To Wide Open Spaces,” dedicated to my parents, Dr. Angel and Chinyere Harris.
I remember living in Austin, Texas, with my parents for one year when I was around 12 years old.
While some of my memories from that time have faded, there is one moment I remember so vividly. We were driving up a hill during the early sunset when we pulled the car over because the Moon was simply too magnificent to ignore. We stepped out, stood together, and looked ahead…it felt like the Moon was so close we could leap right into it.
I think from that day forward, I developed a deep connection to the phases of the moon. Granted, I’ve always been a moon child, but there was something poetic about the way that moment stayed with me.
Last year, I was accepted into graduate school at the University of Texas at Austin, and as I prepared for my transition from Raleigh, North Carolina, back to Austin, I found myself reflecting on everything my parents have done for me. Their love, guidance, coaching, encouragement, and nurturing have shaped me in ways I am still discovering.
I am endlessly grateful for the foundation they gave me, the confidence to dream, the courage to grow, and the freedom to step into new spaces.
I look forward to continuing to make them proud.
I dedicate this painting to them and to the feeling of moving toward wide open spaces…places where I can grow, become, and achieve the goals I’ve imagined for my life, while always carrying the roots of their love with me.
